Spider web in amber: 140 million years old

To be filed under “this is just really cool”.

This chunk of fossilized amber dating from about 140 million years ago was found in southern England by an amateur fossil hunter. The sample contains fossilized pieces of spider webbing, and pushes back the oldest known spider-web fossils by 20 million years. At 140 million years old this fossil dates from the dawn of the Cretaceous Period, at about the time the first flowering plants appeared.
