Science video geekout: Stellar evolution
I study the chemistry of planets, and I enjoy teaching course sections on the evolution of stars and worlds. It’s a fun topic but the details – especially about nucleosynthesis, how fusion in stars generates the periodic table – can get fairly heavy for an introductory geology or environmental science course.
Dr. Cecilia Barnbaum at Valdosta State University created and hosts online a collection of what are easily the best animated videos describing the evolution of stars I’ve seen. She has several videos on other topics, too, including moon phases, seasons, and other astronomical goodies. Her star videos do a wonderful job of describing star evolution with crisp visuals that get the ideas across, but without a lot of intimidating jargon. These animations are definitely going into my lectures from now on.
